I’ve spoken of my old friend Roy on several occasions.  I don’t think I’ve ever told you about the first date with his wife, Linda.  Her sister, Lila, worked at the hospital with Roy.  Having seen Linda, an attractive young blonde, he expressed his interest in getting a date with her.  He decided to talk Lila into fixing them up, but Linda was reluctant.  She was a little wary of Roy and decided it would be better if they talked on the phone a few times before actually going on a date.  Knowing Roy, I’d say that was a smart move.

    They had a few telephone conversations and things seemed headed in the right direction, so Linda agreed to see him.  The arrangement was that Roy would come to her parents’ house and visit for a while and they would get to know each other in person in a safe environment.  If they didn’t like each other, she could tell him to hit the road and would have her parents to back her up.

    The big night came and Roy went to see Linda.  To his surprise, when he got there, he found that they were alone.  Roy’s visit was going smoothly when Linda’s parents showed up.  Unfortunately a family crisis was unfolding and the date was forced to either end or take an unusual turn.  One of Linda’s uncles had been missing in action for a couple of days and it was discovered that a female relative had gotten him drunk and taken him as her love slave.  If this sounds far fetched to you, you’re not the only one.  I knew the people involved and by no stretch of the imagination did the woman did seem like an accomplished hostage taker nor did the man certainly seem to be “love slave” material.

    The next thing Roy knew, he was climbing into the back of a pick-up, was given a weapon and off on a manhunt.  As they rode along in the mid-summer night’s air, Roy and Linda continued their date.  Things went well.  The uncle was reluctantly rescued, Roy and Linda hit it off and no shots were fired.  A perfect first date!
